At Professional Language Solutions we know how fortunate we are to have such a hardworking and dedicated army of freelance teachers; there are over 500 of them and we are very proud of the work they do.
We understand that as a freelance teacher you can sometimes feel disconnected with the rest of the team, so we’ve decided to shine a spotlight on one of our excellent teachers each quarter with a regular ‘meet the teacher’ slot on our blog.
This week, we’ve been talking to Tim Vaughan-Hughes, one of our many excellent English teachers!
I became an EFL teacher…
I became a teacher because at the time I was trying to become a writer, and it seemed an excellent combination.
I’m inspired by...
To see a student gain in confidence, drop the look of bafflement and start to relax and smile, then embrace the language enthusiastically.
The best thing about being a language teacher is…
The best thing about being an English language teacher in London is that you meet people from all around the world who are keen to learn and use English, as well as share their life and work experiences with you.
My first impressions of Professional Language Solutions were…
I started work at PLS when it was run by one of the original owners from his own house. I remember a very smart blue carpet everywhere, and smiling international office staff.
When I was a child, I wanted to be…
Ironically, I wanted to work outdoors, either as an archaeologist or a forester!
Language interests me because…
I believe that language is a wonderful instrument, often underused, and sometimes criminally abused. I think that most people - including myself - could use their own native language more expertly and eloquently, quite apart from learning a new one!
My most memorable teaching moment…
In group classes I’ve always enjoyed seeing students from very different countries, cultures and backgrounds, who might be initially wary of or shy of each other, through the medium of English, drop their preconceptions, break the language barrier, and get on like a house on fire.
